Duchess takes a tumble

So Duchess finally agreed to do something physical. She is taking tumbling. And she is a HOOT. The kid is so not cool with exercise these days but man oh man it's so funny to watch her just not quit. She may have been red faced running those laps around the mats, but she ran hard. She may have moaned and grumbled aloud about doing the stretches that will make tumbling easier, but she did it.

The best part....when the instructor asked the kids if they were tired, everyone raised their hands including Duchess. He then send them on laps. He flat out told them in drill instructor voice that cheerleaders didn't get tired and that is what he was gonna make them, lol. So when they all got back, red faced and exhausted and he asked them again, is anyone tired.....nobody raised their hands except the little redhead next to Duchess, after a couple more laps....he asked again and Duchess looked over at this poor kid and very clearly and loudly said....

"If you raise your hand, I'll hit you"

She is totally Dave's kid.

Aint Gonna Miss This

Thanks a million to my momma and my girls, I'd already plowed twice this day and they lovingly shoveled the end of my driveway.
I'm not gonna miss snow.
I miss humidity and heat.

Updates galore.....

Back in the saddle finally...we've had a seriously busy weird summer so far but honestly, if I can just get my feet back on the ground, I'll be good to go. And no, we didn't win the lottery, dang it.

School starts in two weeks and I feel like my kids have had the worst summer ever. Last summer they had dad half a week thanks to his work schedule, this summer they got him 2 days a month. Couple that with the daycare changing hands and all that drama........thank goodness for dad. Dad has stepped in to wrangle kids for the rest of the summer. Making my vows now that next summer will rock for those two kids!

While it is my utter most heartfelt desire, it doesn't appear that I'll be leaving Utah anytime soon. Work is work and I'm still employed (surprised?) with a move to a new office looming in the next week. Can I just say that it will rock!!!! My office is in the very very far wing from anyone else I'd rather not see at all. This will be pretty sweet for me.

I'm still 50% of a marriage too. Dave is doing well in Texas, looking to purchase his own travel trailer now (and of course a truck) so he can move over to traveling jobs. Fun!!

Princess has completely healed from her surgery. She's talking back and sassy as the day is long. Yep, she's healed! Although I must say, this summer has seen big changes in this kid. Gone are the verbal outbursts, nonstop talking, and whining. The kid has really matured lately. She's thinking before she speaks, if she's mad she has the decency to slam a door rather than whine for hours (I respect the hell out of that), her room is clean without prompting and she is the most responsible dog owner I've ever seen. Frankly, besides loving her to pieces cause she's my kiddo, I find myself really "liking" her, liking who she's becoming. Gradual but noticable deal. So it should be no surprise that we're back in karate. I really had to process all of this before I could commit to karate again, that four days a week schedule screws up my evening schedule so bad. But you know, it's worth it. (yet another reason I smoke, cause life isn't fair damnit)

Duchess is .... well to put it nicely..... a freaking handful. This kid has taken the complete opposite route than her sister. She talks nonstop, she interrupts constantly, she whines (OMGAWD does she whine!!!!!!!!!!!) She has oblivious down pat. I can talk myself breathless giving her instructions just to turn and find her gone. She'll just tune me out and walk off. So yeah, I can't wait for school to start, I think she needs the constant interactions with cooler people than me, i.e. other first graders. This is the point where I've had to sit myself down and have a smoke and a smile while lecturing that "every child goes through this, you didn't kill the oldest, you won't kill this one".....I'm channeling Bill Cosby, although I have been legs. While that is said though, she is still as sweet as ever, which makes disciplining her very hard. Princess has always had a limit on sweetness (like her momma) but Duchess is naturally very sweet.

For example, last night she crawls into my bed, steals MY pillow and wants me to read to her......while I'm trying to go to sleep, after I'd put her to bed in HER bed 30 minutes before. Finally I cave and quickly read "strawberry shortcake and the sleepover" to her. Afterwards, I turn the light off, no longer caring that she was apparently sleeping in my bed for the night. Cause she wanted to have a sleepover in mommy's room.....When I'm almost completely asleep she leans over and kisses my cheek and whispers "Berry Night Mommy" in my ear........its really hard to be mad at that. Even at 11 p.m.

And because I love you internet, I'm going to NOT post pictures of my stomach. Cause frankly it makes me throw up in my mouth a little everytime I see it. I caught a line=drive softball in the stomach this weekend. So my "on lunch quick dr visit to make sure it's normal to swell like this" visit yesterday turned into 3.5 hours once I'd gone from the dr to the hospital for the CT scans and such. And frankly, that was a very very strange experience...... (remember, I'm in UTAH here peeps and have been stuck here for 2.5-ish years) while drinking my contrast drink, the really really nice male nurse kept laughing at the faces I couldn't help but make......then told me that he was sorry that he couldn't add vodka to it......shocker #1.....then during the IV, he actually listened when I told him exactly what vein wouldn't blow, easy cheesy for once..... shocker #2 ........and during the actual scan, when he came back in and casually had a conversation with me about my underwires (please move them as they are showing up) and how there was this new bra on the market with plastic underwires that was just the bomb.... he highly recommended it. Frankly, I could have put him in my purse and taken him home. I bet he'd have completely redecorated my house and helped me get the kids school clothes bought without blinking an eye (with the longest fake lashes I've seen since leaving Diego peeps). Frankly going for a CT scan should not be that entertaining!!!

And now I'd better get some work done, be back later..........I got pics peeps.

Duchess rocks again

Duchess has never been interested in really well anything. She is her own planet, and I just love that about her. No peep pressure for her so far, nope. Beats her own drum, all that jazz. Well during this past week with our obsession over softball (and my aching, well everything) she decided to give it a try. After she beat the ever loving crap out of the tball stand, we gave up and started pitching to her.

N-A-T-U-R-A-L

She started right handed because her mom's an idiot who forgets that she's a lefty. Yep, call CPS now peeps. (pics out of order cause I'm too tired to care)

But she connected, alot.

Then we moved to left handed batting. And starting going into the neighbors yard to get our balls. The kid was having a serious case of beginners luck. Princess was disgusted. It was hysterical.

What was more hysterical was the "look" she wears when playing. I'm still trying to put my finger on who she gets this from, but man she is competitive. Hello! So batting for her equals, "I hate you" looks, followed by "keep talking bigshot and I'll eat your heart" which quickly led to "you stay here, I'm going to get my gun" looks.

It's not everyday you learn something about your kid. Nor is it everyday that she hits facing the wrong direction and cleared the porch of people (jumping off left and right sides like rats from a ship) as she pegged one straight at us, thankfully it hit the side of the house instead of a window.
That freaking rocks. I could use some agression release........where's my bat?

Happy No Work Day

So what did you do with your "gimme" day, you know the "holiday falls on the weekend therefore you get the Friday before off" day.....?

Besides cleaning my entire house (geez, 10 hours later and you can't tell at all), shopping for the holiday party tomorrow, I did the playday thing. Duchess went to play and I got Princess' best friend (same family peeps, that is totally the way to roll!).

So I took advantage of having two 10 year olds...... see once upon a time I was nuts about softball. Once upon a time, I played a mean second base. Once upon a time, I could windmill your arse!

So when the kids mentioned in passing that they'd like to play one day, I dug up the old equipment and off we went.

(except I was in cleaning clothes so one word about the way I look in my most unflattering outfit and I'm stalking you)

Can you please tell me if that isn't the purtiest background for a game ever? And yes *M* is wearing a skirt. These girls are all about the fashionable look, even to sweat in. Wish they'd rub off on me.

Little hams. Turns out neither one of them were very versed in "ball". So we started at the beginning.......batting stances, proper swing techniques, how to throw a freaking ball.....the usual.

Don't worry, I corrected this immediately! Her stance was waaaaaaaay too wide.

Here Princess is showing her from the outfield how to do it, lol. They totally crack me up.

No words.
Well Princess got the bug. So we had to set up the pitch back cause noone has the patience to throw a ball for several hours straight. (okay, I don't)

Is it me or is this kid seriously growing? Dang, she's so tall!!!!!!!!!! And getting the hang of actually catching the ball and throwing it correctly. Hopefully, maybe, she'll be as obsessed as I once was.

P.S. Does anyone else have a yellow rubber chicken in their yard?

The Never Ending Backyard Saga...

Because there can never be enough in my backyard....we added a patio set today. Turns out the furniture fairy doesn't just drop it off, you actually have to assemble these things.......why oh why didn't I wait till The Man was in town.

Oh because Cec, and My mom/brother dropped in at just the right time. Lucky duckies.

The kids quickly made off with the box.......fort time!

Brother started in asap, with Murphy giving a hand.

Speaking of giving a hand, little Alan is getting quite large and is only 35 weeks along so I gave Cec a hand too.....

Several hands, can't quite keep my hands off the little bugger.

But I can strike an attractive pose...

Notice that everyone else was working while I played, cause I got run off. I put two screws in, striped them both and I was done. I'm not cut for mechanical anything. I'm better at managing/supervising/bossing.

Awwww, almost makes me forget that she's grounded.

But all in all, I must say, I'd have been screwed with the help. They really truly rock!

Hi mom!!!!!!! Love ya!

Frankly I'm thrilled with my new patio set, even though I'll never have enough company over to fill the seats. Only those few who know to drop by rather than plan in advance. Cause I'll find a way out of that.......
Cause I really don't like people, hey, I'm nothing if not honest.

Changing Utah, one kid at a time

Princess is finishing up basketball camp this week. So normally I drop her off on my way to work, wait till they open the doors (cause I'm not one of those parents that drop my kid and drive away while they stand outside, geez people - be good parents) then off to work I go.

Except this morning, somebody was running late (not me, I assure you...I'm never late). So the kids were stuck outside waiting. Princess jumps out of the car, leaving me waiting at the curb to go join her two new friends.

Frankly I don't mind, as hello.....some of my songs aren't kid friendly so I can jam without worrying about my influence on her growing psych. So here I am, jamming out having a good time, occassionally looking over as parents continue to drop kids off and drive around me and away......making sure that Princess is fine, even though she is only 150 feet from me.

When I noticed something not quite right......

Seems that she pulled a deck of cards out of her vest....... oh no......... surely not.........

As the crowd of girls got bigger, I realized that yes, my kid was playing Texas Hold'em with her new bestest friends..... sweet innocent little Mormon girls......

And the little blonde on the right, she folded.......
My only thought was please God, don't let her take their money, I'll never hear the end of it!

Summer's Here

And you know what that means?

Kids camps!

So in addition to all the crazy stuff we have to do each week to keep our schedules running smooth, we now throw in basketball camp, kids' camp (instead of daycare) with daily field trips and fun.

Tonight I gave Walmart almost 100 bucks just to get started on this project.

Lunch boxes and food and freezy things.

I made some changes this year. So tonight I'm staying up watching a movie while I pack a week's worth of lunches. Those little snack ziplocks are godsent!

Can you imagine how much I'd save by buying normal sized bags/boxes of foods then making my own individual portions? Well I did the math, cause I'm OCD and needed to prove it to myself before I went whole hog.

So by buying big cans of fruits instead of fruit cups, then making portions - big bags of crackers/chips and you guessed it making portions - frozen cans of juice to mix up and put into reusable lidded cups - this week alone I saved $29.55. Please keep in mind that this week is three days worth of food. Holy crap. That's not counting the stuff I already had in mind from my pantry! Woohoo....

Now I can totally justify the extra money spent on camps....well that and since I can't be with them during the summer days, they might as well have a blast!

Embrace your inner Scrooge!

He Dropped by........

The Man joined us for Memorial Day Weekend. 10 minutes after he walked in the door, he was on the tramp with the kids.
Throwing them around and having a blast. Honestly this thrills me as at least it wasn't me up there being man-handled. Although I did get throw over his shoulder and carted to another room at one point, that is not as fun as it looks, dang sharp shoulder blades!

But for a little while, it was all about our girls. The way it should be. I love that when he comes home, he tries to carve out time from fix it projects and must do's to just enjoy his kids.

And enjoy himself!

Mommy's Graduate

My baby is on her way to 1st grade.....

First, I didn't think she'd actually get up there and say her part, she's notoriously shy when she wants to be.....most of the time, if she doesn't know you well, she'll just look at you talk and then walk away when it's her turn.

Second, I swear I did her hair before she went to school. I'm not sure what happened, I think perhaps she rolled in dirt and then went through a wind tunnel.

Third, I'm so glad she didn't adlib her part for "U", cause she'd been working on some very interesting things to add.......thank you Jesus for hearing my prayers.

My other name is Wrath.....

I'm so seriously pissed.

We have worked our tails off on our yard....and it was going great. Until my main sprinkler valve cracked. Thus the story begins.

It was the sprinkler valve that controls all the lines and was put in by the builders with the front and side yards before we bought our house. It was labeled a self-draining system. But we winterized it anyway by draining the lines before the snow kicked in last winter.

Apparently you have to have a special tool to drain the actual valve too, or it will freeze and crack. Like mine did. And worse, it can blow a pipe that leads out of it to the front lawn sprinklers.

Guess what?

My line cracked and blew. But since it's underground we didn't know until we went to replace the valve regulator today. And bam......there's an underground marsh in my flowerbeds up front.

Warranty peeps? Doing their very best to NOT ACCEPT any blame and then rush off the phone.

So thankfully since my brother is in town and The Man is out of state still, he's spent most of his day knee deep in mud....fixing it.

Until the fix gave way.......and another marsh of mud filled up.

Tomorrow is another day, pray for me. Cause I've already beat a shrub to death with the pipe wrench after getting off the phone with the warranty guy and then his landscaping guy.

Hell hath no fury like me pissed off and dealing with a situation where I have no control.....geez and I thought I was getting better at the whole vengeance thing.

Guess not. Going to bake my brother a cake, cause he's the bomb and then I'm gonna get some sleep. Gonna pick him up early and start this madness all over again tomorrow.

Caged Monkeys and Framing

It was a most productive Thursday!

I broke down and caged my monkeys. Mom and I got the kids a tramp, how much fun is that. Even better the Photo-Elusive-Step-Dad and my visiting brother came in while we were all at school/work and put that bad boy together. Woohoo baby. The kids came home and promptly passed out in joy, then came too and I didn't see them again until dark. Heaven.....

The back corner of my yard looked bare, so this wound up being the perfect addition. Now mind you it looks a little dorkey but unlike 99% of the parents in my neighborhood I actually put up my enclosure. I.E. my dad put it up, and then read me the instruction manual over the phone, and then went over the rules, twice....cause he is a teeny bit protective of his girls. Not to mention he's a retired cop so he's kinda safety concerned. (probably has nothing to do with the fact that my children inherited my "clumsey" gene)

So I left the back door open, cooked a great dinner. Cleaned my kitchen, watched "Hairspray", sang and danced with my broom and mop while sneaking pics and peeks wondering when they'd get bored. Turns out, they multiplied. Everytime I looked out, there were more additions to the cage. And the noise, Oh My Lawd, the noise. Hence "Hairspray" cause I sooooooo can outsing anyone at the top of my lungs. Yeah baby (notice I didn't say anything about quality of sound, just volume)!
Now Murphy's reaction to the cage was unique. He ran outside and skidded to a stop, promptly had to pee in place on the deck and then barked for three hours straight while running around and under. Terrified. Poor little thing, he just didn't get it. He's had a really rough day. Besides all the outside noise and strange new cage in his yard, he had to deal with compressors and hammering.......downstairs........
Cause the contractor showed up and started my basement today. Woohoo baby. See we're adding a great room (seriously great at 24x16), a nice sized laundry room, a bedroom and the largest damn bathroom in Utah. I got carried away on the bathroom thing. Opps, does anyone else have a 12x9 bathroom that is NOT a masterbath? Anyone?

So if you're standing where I was when I took the picture, you're in the great room looking down the hall. Simple and flowing layout. I hacked those damn plans up, cause I hate corners and silly cluttery floor design. Not for me. My goal is large, open and airy.....yeah!

This is the view from the bedroom (the bathroom isn't framed in yet, this is just the first day's work). So you're lucky enough to be able to follow this cool project of mine which I've labeled the "Pay as I go, phase 1-5, basement expansion cause I need somewhere to send the kids in the winter cause they drive me nuts when we're snowed in" project, or for short....the Bat-Shit-Crazy project. Join me, it'll be fun. And seriously I can't possible annoy you as much as I annoy my contractor, poor guy. I seriously make changes and small adjustments until the VERY LAST MINUTE, which he must absolutely love.
Teeny example of that......this conversation actually happened this morning when we did the pre-work walk-thru
"I'm not liking that there is a corner here? Why is there a corner there? What purpose is that corner? It's not like I could PUT anything in it, it's tiny! What if we move this wall out oh what is that 2 inches..."
Patient contractor: "more like 12 inches"
"and then just streamline this wall, it'll just add to the laundry room, I like that much better, what do you think?"
Patient contractor: ".."
"perfect, let's do that"
He got smart and just started nodding alot. See, he's learned how to deal with me already. And, I was totally right......review that pic again from the great room, see how lovely and streamlined that hallway is.........no stupid 2 or 12 inch corner between the laundry room and bedroom in the hall....
And you've just met my new obsession.......now that most of the landscaping is done, I'm now a basement building/design junkie. God help us.

Happy Mothers Day....Hope4Grace style....

Mother's Day started early this morning. At 8 a.m., luckily I had gotten up and just got out of the shower when the door bell rang, my mommy brought gifts and since she has to work later today, came by early to celebrate. Which led to some old school karate moves in the backyard....

(See my purty new grass) so once we have the gift giving out of the way (I got plants!!) we went out in the backyard to see about putting up the volleyball set I'd bought for the kids....

Can I just say that for such a potato shaped girl, I have small legs......short legs.....so I really like it when I have a nice long reflection, legs for miles....

But sadly the volleyball set didn't work as it's TOO big. Good lawd that thing was big.....so back it goes. I think we need a badmitton set instead.

And because I can always count on my mother to keep it real.......here's a picture of my butt as I work on my honeysuckle plants......nice.......I need to get some exercise in....obviously

I heart Saturdays

So today, I managed to accomplish alot.

*I stood up for my kid.
*I purchased mother's day gifts (outdid myself this year, I must say)
*I did my yard work before 11 a.m.
*I managed to cook two meals today, record for this week
*I avoided school all together
*I avoided laundry all together
*I missed my husband
*Arranged two playdates for my kids
*Cleaned out my room
*Sat out in my backyard with a glass of sweet tea and enjoyed the grass between my toes and the full breeze.

Yep, I kicked this Saturday's butt......

Holy Crap here comes May...

It boggles my mind that May is upon us already. It couldn't have come fast enough when I consider how very long the snow has lasted.....cause honestly, the mountains are still covered with the white crap. But the amount of time that has flown since Christmas just amazes me.

The Man has been gone three months now. Strangely it feels much longer than when he was deployed overseas, gone for six months straight. He's been home four times already and we're getting better at just enjoying that time. Well, we enjoy that time and then we do home improvement stuff, like sod, sprinklers and starting the deck. However, I must say that the children have started to revolt. At first, they handled it like the good little military children that they were, except now, Duchess has completely declared war. She is all about the guilt factor now. Poor guy, I have to moniter her conversations so she doesn't lay it down too thick. It's not like he's having a Shrek Karoake Party down there. For the time being though, it appears that we will continue to live in two separate states while we work at meeting in the middle. So until then, we have our brand new house here, the girls and I making way in Utah while The Man is working in the oil/gas field in South Texas, working on his state license and flying home the occassional weekend. All this while still doing his school, he rocks. And he's got the red neck to go with the attitude, cause boy he doesn't ever remember the sun screen. Sexy!

Duchess sadly still hasn't mastered her last name. Dear heavens, I know it's unusual but it's not that hard. But being left-handed and there are some unusual letters in there, so I gotta give her props for trying. So right now, she's up on the bar writing it over and over and over. I've been slacking in my homeschooling efforts...dreadful of me, really. However, the kid did make the principal's list for overachievement and got her a part in the end of school program. Rocking baby girl, kick Kindergarten's arse! Look out first grade, here she comes.

Princess has put karate on hold since it's too hard on my "single-mom" schedule during the week, but we did manage to get a Saturday cheer class going. woohoo. Ain't nothing like getting up Saturday morning to her cheering and jumping around the house. If only she'd get some laundry done too, little slacker. She's working on her 12-multiplication sums right now, so she's staring daggers in the back of my head....think she knows I'm blogging? lol

Statistics can bite me. Looks like I'm gonna blow my 4.0 folks. It's so freaking painful to admit but I'm carrying a high B and I just can't seem to blow through that ceiling to an A. Dang! But can I just say, DON'T take Statistics! It's the devil.

Got some good med results this week, still waiting on two more tests, so cross your fingers. And slowly but surely my contacts/eyes are getting back to normal. I'm officially falling apart. Figures, as I'll be 32 this month. Doesn't that just blow?

So since we have no water this evening till 10 p.m., I'm gonna go blow off chores and instead paint my toes....black toenails are the bomb baby.

Curb Appeal

So I did some time on the Homes & Gardens website, which is my crack lately. I just need my fix. And two points became obvious.

1. I live in a cookie cutter neighborhood. All the houses are 1 of 10 styles, they are all the in the same color family and since its a new neighborhood, there are no tree except the skinny little ones on the curbs that the city planted. Thus, my landscaping is the exact replica of all my neighbors, right down to the number of bushes and wood chips.
2. Colors: as I said the color is obviously the same of every other house.
So according to H&G, there are two immediate things I need to do to enhance my curb appeal.
Move and ... I'm kidding since it's apparent that me and this house will be together for awhile, thank you economy.
So yesterday I started on landscaping. I tore out most of the offending ugly stick shrubs and got busy.

I quick trip to Home Depot and I had the basics (in addition to the pine shrubs and tuplis I'd already planted). Notice my OCD method of prepping for work, everything is laid out nice and neatly, according to my list. Mental much?

I started with lots of new soil. Necessary I think. Then I added some spiky plants, don't ask me names, I lost all the tags. But I like the attitude of these babies. I also read that grouping in 2's and 3's are best. So I got 3. Cause I follow directions very well.

Color was necessary since my tulips haven't popped yet. So I got some calla lilies. 2 of them since they are like GOLD apparently. Damn.

Meet Steve, who has a twin also named Steve. (Over the Hedge watchers will recognize this) Duchess names them as a set apparently. Steve looked alot bigger at Home Depot but once planted he lost some height (say it with me, duh) but I still like them, even if they aren't as magestic as I thought they'd be. But I am helping them along, Miracle Gro folks. Plus so far, I've managed to beat the black thumb of death by using garden gloves....
The work continues today as I weed the flower bed, rake the backyard in prep of sod and get my weedeating done. I may even do some mowing, as it needs it, even if it is brown grass.
And I'm getting kicked off the computer cause Duchess wants to do webkinz. Peace out.

The LIttle Dog That Could

After an exhausting Monday, I came home to find Murphy happy as a clam in his new "room", bought to keep him contained lovingly without putting him in his crate. So far so good.....

So while chatting to my girl as usual, I took him for a walk to do his business.

Except four boys on skateboards were going by the house and waiting on the corner for a straggler.

Murphy went nuts.

So instead of choking him, I gave him some slack thinking he'd get a little closer and bark....

Except he jumped his leash.

Somehow getting off the leash and running hellbent to eat him some good little Utah boys.

OMGawd......

I can only imagine how I looked running down the street after the dog, in my work clothes, long black work coat flapping, pearls shinning in my ears, screaming my lungs out.....

"Murphy, don't *&&^%&* eat them......NO NO NO NO Murphy NO NO NO NO...(*&%$#&"

Finally realizing in mere seconds that I was doing no good....I tried something else.....

"Boys, RUN, RUN, he's off the leash, he's small but he BITES"

They looked very unconcerned except the closer he got, the louder he barked and he just looked like a little devil on wings.

So they ran, and he chased.........and I chased......

Until I got smart......

"TREAT"

He beat me to the backdoor.

I'm going to take a soak in the tub.......GAWD

I so need to move....

This is the view from my office window, at 10:00 a.m. That sucks! It sucks worse since I went in early today (thought traffic would be much worse), missed my lunch so I left at 4. Then spent 15 minutes digging out my car and then still had to have a total stranger dig out a car path for me. Thank you Mr. Red Shirt old guy. You rock.
This is the view of my driveway after I managed to get in ( I can't seem to get my pictures in order these days) ......45 minutes into the journey of digging out my driveway. I was stuck half in driveway, half in street. Not good. Thank you sucky neighbors down the street who hired a company to come clean out their driveway and then wave as they skirt inside while I stand knee deep in snow in my work clothes. You suck.

My car stuck.

View of afterwards......
This is why I think of moving with such fond thoughts. I am NOT cut out for this winter maintenance upkeep. The Man will surely deal with this when he gets home. Surely. Unless he gets stuck at work. Oh please don't let him get stuck at work..........please.......
